Rice began photographing the West German side of the Berlin Wall in 1983. Calling himself a "visual archeologist", Rice focused in on the brightly colored pictographic art, graffiti, symbols, poetry, slogans, and expletives that covered the surface of the Wall. The imagery is laden with social, political, and cultural history. Now, with the Wall gone, these 38 brilliant color plates serve as documentarz records of a fascinating visual language that addressed the tensions between the East and West, and that reflected the hopes and outrage of people living in one very important place at one particular moment in history.

The accompanying essay is by Charles E. McClelland (history, U. of New Mexico) and it provides a comprehensive sketch of the unique history of Berlin as it pertains to the erection, devastating consequences, and long awaited collapse of the Wall.
